One of my favorite things about hiking in the mountains around Mestia in the Svaneti region of Georgia was the number of animals I encountered along the way – especially cows! I found these guys enjoying the view high up on Mount Mestia, just before I reached the top.

Hi Katie!
I think its so inspiring that you took a year of to travel!
I am just visiting Georgia for vacation. Is it safe to take walks like in Svaneti on you own(daytrips)?
Greetings, Anna
Thanks Anna!
I did a day hike in Mestia on my own – up to a big cross on a hill. The path was very well marked and I felt perfectly safe.
For anything beyond that, though, I might suggest taking a guide.
That’s too funny! We really liked hiking amongst all the cows high up in the mountains above Appenzell, Switzerland. The only sounds were birds chirping, cow bells clanging, and the occasional moo.
That looks like a great hike! And, I’ve never seen such alert looking cows.
This is so cute and funny. They really look as if relaxing and enjoying the view.

That reminds me of this group of very cooperative cows I came across in England: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/the-photographer-and-the-models/
