Saturday Scenes: Turkey’s Sumela Monastery

Just outside of Trabzon, Turkey, not far from the Black Sea coast, you can find the Sumela Monastery. The monastery was founded way back in the fourth century on the side of a mountain overlooking a forest. Legend has it that a couple of priests built it after finding a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary nearby. The picture below captures one of the many frescoes inside the monastery’s Rock Church that date back to the 14th century.
